Random 5 on Friday ~ August 29th

The Pebble Pond

1. Big news...Big. Huge! We signed up for foster care orientation. It may not go any further than that but it just might! I am so giddy with excitement. I have a lot of questions and I'm scared of a few things. At the same time I just want to hurry up the process. We shall see. And pray. Yes, pray. And pray some more. :)

2. I am thinking about going hunting with Brian this year. I am pretty excited about it. I love to be with him. I used to hunt with my dad when I was a kid. I have never gone with Brian before. The whole family signed up for a hunters safety course. It is 3 nights in a row for 3 1/2 hours. Yes, 3 1/2 hours. That should be interesting.

3. School is starting very soon. I have to much to do before then. Lord, help me. I haven't even ordered all the curriculum!

4. Morgan is starting horse back riding lessons! Excited does not even do justice to how she is feeling.

5. Today is grocery day. I made out a meal plan. It is color coded and everything. I must stick to it. Must, must, must!

Chest flys, Bicept curls, Skull crushers...oh my!

Recently, I posted on Facebook that I am now a firm believer in weight training for women. I had quite a few people ask me what I was doing. Most people know that I have been working out steadily but I haven't really said what I am doing. So I decided to do a blog post about it. Cause you know, that's just what I do. ;)

I have started and stopped a few different programs over the last year. T25, Les Mills Combat, Jillian Michaels.....to name a few. I LOVE the Combat program, by the way. I did notice that doing these programs I lost extra "fluff" but that was about it. I also got bored. Same thing..over and over. I guess I lose interest quickly.

Because I am in a wedding on December 6th with THREE beautiful ladies in their early 20's I decided I needed to kick it up a notch. I started running and doing sprints. I hear people say how much they LOVE running. I am kind of like that but not really. I "like" running. I LOVE how I feel when I am done running but the actual running....eh...its ok. If I am in the mood.

So whats a girl to do?? The wedding was inching closer and I felt like I was in a rut. I started doing push ups, planks and squats. I wanted to add weight with my squats but I had no weights. I told Brian that I wanted to add weights into my workout routine and he got them for me. Since then, I have been doing weight training only. I LOVE it. Love, love, love. Seriously love it. I have lost inches, my energy level has sky rocketed and I am much stronger. Which is important for me because I lift a beautiful 90 pound bundle of joy many times a day.

I am NO expert. I started searching online for workouts that I would actually like doing. I wrote out a plan and jumped in. That was 3 weeks ago. I am actually see muscle definition in my arms and shoulders. Nothing crazy. I don't want to be muscle bound. Some people lift really heavy and add supplements to gain a lot of muscle. That is not me. I want to be toned and lean.

Before I jump into my workouts, I want to also mention that I love to eat. I have cut out most pop but I still eat pretty much the same. I have always been a meat and potatoes kind of girl. I can remember going out to eat with my friends in high school and they would order a teeny tiny little meal. I am the girl saying..."Give me a steak, baked potato, maybe some wings too and a big ol piece of apple pie for dessert"! I have never been a "snacker". So that really wasn't a problem. I have just tried to make healthier choices.

Ok...you are really here to read my workouts so here we go.

Equipment:
 ~ 20, 10 and 5 pound dumbbells
 ~ Exercise ball
~ Weight bench (most of the exercises I do can be done without a weight bench. I just use it because I have it. Technically, its not even a weight bench but a Total Gym. I just use is for the bench.)

Because I have a goal in mind, I do A LOT. My bridesmaids dress has to be given to a friend 6 weeks before the wedding to be fit for me. So that is my goal date. That gives me limited time so I do upper body one day and lower the next. Rest on Sunday.

Upper Body:
Chest Fly on ball, 10lbs, 12 reps, 5 sets
Dumbbell Press on ball, 20lbs, 8 reps, 5 sets
Dumbbell Press (incline) on ball, 20lbs, 8 reps, 5 sets
Upright Rows, 10lbs,  12 reps, 5 sets
Back Fly, 10lbs, 12 reps, 5 sets
Shoulder Press, 10lbs, 12 reps, 5 sets
Lateral Deltoid Raise, 10lbs, 12 reps, 5 sets
Bicep Curl, 10lbs, 12 reps, 5 sets
Skull Crusher on ball, 12 reps, 5 sets

Lower Body:
Squats, 20lbs, 20 reps, 5 sets (That's a total of 40 lbs, kills me by the time I'm done but totally worth it! I look like I have had a butt lift! Honestly. If you know me personally, you already know I have quite the junk in the trunk. It is much more youthful these days. Very exciting!)
Hip Abduction, lying on side, no weight, 12 reps, 5 sets
Plank, 45 seconds, 5 times (done in between sets of hip abduction)
Deadlift, 20 lbs, 12 reps, 5 sets
Ball Squeeze, 12 reps, 5 sets
Calf raises, 20 lbs, 12 reps, 5 sets
Side Bend, 20 lbs, 12 reps, 5 sets

I do a lot of super sets. That is when you do one exercise and then move on to another one with only about 30 seconds rest in between. It saves a lot of time and burns more fat. I will do a set of dumbbell presses and then move onto skull crushers. They are both done on the ball so I can just change weight and get them done together. Most of my workout are done that way. If I do not do the super set then I do something called active rest. Instead of just standing around waiting to do my next set, I will do jumping jacks, run in place, burpees, push ups, etc.

I find the weight training fun! I don't dread doing it. I can mix it up. Change exercises. I think I finally found something I will stick with! Especially once I started seeing results.

So that is it! Did I explain it alright? Any questions? Let me know!

Random 5 on Friday ~ August 22

The Pebble Pond

1. My tomatoes are very slowly turning red! Yippee!

2. I put up my very first roadside stand! It was so exciting. Someday, I really want to have a "real" roadside stand. I will sell things from my garden, canned goods and maybe even candles. Doesn't that sound fun!? I only sold 2 cucumbers but hey, you have to start somewhere. Right?!

3. I have cucumbers coming out of my ears. I canned a boatload of pickles this week.

4. I have been drinking a gallon of water a day. A GALLON. Do you have any idea how often that makes a person have to stop everything they are doing and run to the bathroom!?

5. Every Monday Brian and I go on a date. The last 2 weeks we have done fishing. Yes, fishing. I love fishing! I have always held the "biggest fish" record in this house. 16 years I have carried that title. Not anymore. He finally out-fished me.

Random 5 on Friday ~ August 15th

The Pebble Pond

1. Do you feel like you eat the same meals over and over and over again? Goodness, I do. I'd love to change things up a bit. Any ideas?

2. I have tremendously cut down my soda intake. Can I get a "Hallelujah"?!

3. It was the week of bee stings here. Alyssa got stunk on her foot, Morgan got stung on her eye and I got stung on my foot and my hand!

4. I really need to get my butt in gear. I have school books to get together, school to plan, a garden to tend, a family to love and I'm ready for a nap. ;)

5. This was an amazing blog post by Ann Voskamp. Did you read it? If not, you should.

Random 5 on Friday ~ August 8th

The Pebble Pond

Hi all! I just wanted to thank you all so much for following my blog. I also want to send a special thanks to all the ladies that link up with me every Friday.
I can't always comment on your blogs but I do try to read them.

1. So this week was pretty scary. Most of you probably already know this from TOS and Facebook but I was in the hospital for 2 days. I was having heart palpitations, tightness in my chest and a slew of other fun things. The doctors have ruled out anything serious. Thank God!! I have to wear a heart monitor for THIRTY days. Yes, you heard that right. After that I follow up with a cardiologist. Getting older kind of stinks!

2. My whole family was incredibly amazing while I was in the hospital. That is TWO stays in the hospital this year. Blah. Anyway, my husband really stepped up to the plate. He even brought me a shirt with his cologne on it because he knows I can't sleep very well with out him. Ummmm....yeah, he is a keeper.

3. My house is a mess. The end.

4. I have a slew of cucumbers and ones that are ready to be pickles! Yay!

5. I'm thinking about having a yard sale. I haven't had one for years. We moved the kids bedrooms around. Carter and Morgan were still sharing a room. We were waiting until we moved to put all the girls together but that is taking longer than excepted because we cant find anything! After moving the kids around I came across so much stuff to get rid of.

Random 5 on Friday ~ August 2nd

The Pebble Pond

1. We spent the day yesterday looking at vehicles. We are torn. We need a new van. At this point, I can not even believe our van is still running. A full size van is very hard to find. It is a gas hog. Frankly, I am tired of driving the beast. IF we could find one we would probably just go that route but like I said we can't find one. So we have been looking at SUVs and minivans. If we go that route then we would carry Taylor's wheelchair on the back on a wheelchair carrier. I am a little nervous about doing this but I would LOVE to drive something smaller.

After some research, I have discovered that a minivan and most SUVs can not carry the load of a wheelchair on the back. It has to be a full size SUV. Ugh. If only we were millionaires. We are stuck. No idea what we are going to do.

2. We took the kids Go Cart racing. They had a blast! It was the first time they have ever done anything like that.

3. Taylor has been doing so good walking. This week she even walked OUTSIDE! She loved it.

4. I highlighted my own hair. Yes, yes I did! Guess what? It actually turned out!

5. Brian and I celebrated 17 years since our first date on Monday. We are not actually sure of the exact date. We just know it was the end of July. :) We went to get ice cream and had an ice cream fight. It was love at first scoop. Haha! On Monday, we went out and got ice cream, of course. It didn't end in an ice cream fight though. We clean up enough messes. ;)
